Week Three

Always remember, your focus determines your reality.

George Lucas

One thing that I’ve always struggled with is time management. After calculating the hours that I have allowed myself to study, it comes out to only 3 hours out of 168. This clearly shows that I need to prioritize studying and de-prioritize other things.

For my current class schedule I should have atleast double the amount of hours that I have allocated for studying. I’m going to be moving things around so that I can have at least 6 hours a week.

This week I’m going to try to combine activities and how to prioritize better. When I come home from work I’m going to make a mental list of what needs to be done.

This week was a major refresher on Ethics. We learned about various ethical frameworks as we prepare for our ethical essay which basically will determine whether or not we pass this class. (No pressure!)

I felt like the article about “What every computer science major should know” was a bit too intense for me. I do agree that a portfolio looks a lot better than a resume, as everyone has a resume but a portfolio shows what you can do. I disagree that every programmer needs to know all of those languages that the website listed out. If someone knew all of those languages then they would be the perfect full stack engineer, someone who can code both the front-end and the back-end.

That’s all for this week. I’m looking forward to improving on my time management.

  1. I think it is great that you are going to shift your schedule around to allow for more study time. I personally find myself rushing through the readings, not spending enough time taking in the knowledge. One suggestion I have is instead of making a mental list, make a paper one and check things off when you finish them. I often feel accomplished when I am able to check something off a physical list. You are also less likely to forget something if it is all laid out in front of you.

  2. I agree that time management is difficult. Personally, I am unable to stick to a consistent plan. My main advice is to start early and prioritize. I always read through the assignments and due dates the day they become available. This helps me synthesize what work I should prioritize. Then, I try to do at least a little work everyday. Of course, it’s harder for you because you have to balance work and school. Good luck!
